From here, over in the direction of the setting sun,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a place many countless worlds away,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lies the utterly pure realm of Sukh\u0101vat\u012b, ‘the Blissful’, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There resides the supreme and perfect Buddha, Boundless Life and Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To that Lord and protector, I pay homage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I offer clouds of imagined gifts, just like Samantabhadra’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I confess misdeeds accumulated over many lifetimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I rejoice in the virtuous actions of all beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I request the turning of the Wheel of Dharma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I pray that you do not pass into nirv\u0101\u1e47a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, through the virtues amassed in past, present and future,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I pray that as soon as my life ends and I pass from here,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I may be born in that sublime realm, and, like the Lord himself, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfectly achieve my own and others’ aims\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make this wish of mine come true, I pray!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was spoken by the Karmapa holder of the Red Hat in response to the fine and ardent requests of Karma Lodr\u00f6, the lama of Gina Monastery, and Drongpa Lama, who said there was a need for brief aspiration prayer for Sukh\u0101vat\u012b that could be recited regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its centre, the blessed Lord Amit\u0101bha, ‘Boundless Light’,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presides amidst a retinue of countless bodhisattvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotedly, with body, speech and mind, I pay homage,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I offer real and imagined gifts and confess my harmful acts and downfalls,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I rejoice in virtue, and request you to turn the wheel of Dharma,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I beseech you to remain, and dedicate all virtue towards enlightenment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May all sentient beings, my very own parents, as infinite as space,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attain the omniscient state of perfect Buddhahood!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To this end, from this moment on,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I shall train in the actions of a bodhisattva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this representing the virtues of past, present and future,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I dedicate it so that all beings may attain perfect enlightenment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, in all their lives until then,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be born in Sukh\u0101vat\u012b, there to behold the Victorious One!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the Fifteenth Karmapa, Khakhyab Dorje<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O dharmak\u0101ya Amit\u0101bha, embodiment of all the buddhas,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And protector Avalokite\u015bvara, manifestation of compassion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To these ultimate and supreme sources of refuge, I pray!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May I and all beings, my previous mothers, as infinite as space,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Face no unfavourable conditions, only ever-increasing positivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May we be free from misdeeds and have the eight qualities and ten virtues;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, in our future lives, may we travel to the pure realm of Great Bliss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bless us, so that having attained buddhahood in that physical form,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may become a guide who leads beings from extremes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And gain strength and power just like yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supplicate like this with a one-pointed mind, and recite:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201com amitabha hrih\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, in response to a request from Demchok Lhamo of noble family, the one known as Karmapa put this into writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How wondrous is the Buddha Infinite Light <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the lord Great Compassion on his right, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great Power on his left, all in the midst<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of buddhas and bodhisattvas beyond number. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as I pass on, may I be born<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without another lifetime in between<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that pure land of untold happiness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And wonder that is called Sukhavati<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And see the buddha Amitabha\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I ask all buddhas and bodhisattvas of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ten directions, bless me that my prayer <\/p>\n\n\n\n

May be fulfilled without impediment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note: On the seventh day of the Vaisakha month of the Female Fire Bird Year, at the age of thirteen, the Tulku Mingyur Dorje saw the buddha Amitabha and his retinue and heard Amitabha actually speak these words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buddhas and bodhisattvas of all times <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And all directions, please consider me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rejoicing in the two accumulations,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I offer all my merit to the Jewels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus may the teachings of the Buddha thrive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I dedicate this virtue to all beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May every sentient being reach buddhahood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I gather all the virtues there may be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one, so they may ripen in my being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May I be cleansed of the two obscurations <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then perfect the two accumulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May I live long, be healthy, and increase<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In both experience and realization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this life, may I rise through the ten levels, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when I pass away, may I at once<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be born in the pure realm Sukhavati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I am born there, may the lotus open. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

May I reach buddhahood with that same body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once I\u2019ve achieved enlightenment, may I <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guide beings forever with my emanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contemplation<\/strong>

Sukhavati

Sukhavati<\/strong>\u00a0(Skt.\u00a0Sukh\u0101vat\u012b<\/em>; Tib.\u00a0Dewachen<\/em>) is the blissful\u00a0buddha field\u00a0of\u00a0Amitabha. One of the\u00a0buddha fields of the five families, said to be located in the western direction.

According to\u00a0Jamg\u00f6n Ngawang Lekpa, the four causes of rebirth in Sukhavati are:
(1) Generating\u00a0bodhichitta
(2) Accumulating\u00a0merit\u00a0in many ways
(3) Repeatedly bringing the buddha field to mind
(4) Dedicating all one’s sources of merit as causes for rebirth in that pure realm

There are three\u00a0sutras\u00a0by\u00a0Buddha Shakyamuni\u00a0that expound on the pure land of Sukhavati. There are Tibetan translations of two of these texts:
(1) Amitabhavyuha Sutra<\/em>\u00a0which is also known as the \u201clonger\u201d Sukhavativyuha Sutra
(2) Sukhavativyuha Sutra<\/em>\u00a0which is also known as the \u201cshorter\u201d Sukhavativyuha Sutra
(3) The third is only extant in Chinese:
